Joint stock company Prague Airport (Letiště Praha, a. s.) was founded in February 2008 as part of the privatization transformation of the state enterprise Správa Letiště Praha, s.p.. In line with the Czech Republic’s Government Memorandum Nr. 888 passed on July 9th, 2008, almost all assets of the state enterprise Správa Letiště Praha, s.p. were transferred into the joint stock company Prague Airport as its basic capital on December 1st, 2008. On the given date, Prague Airport assumed all rights and duties of the state enterprise, as well as its employees, business approvals, certificates and licenses, including all procedures and resources necessary for the Airport’s operation.

The sole shareholder of the joint stock company became the Czech Republic represented by the Ministry of Finance. The joint stock company’s governing body is formed by a five-member Board of Directors and a Supervisory Board.
Since December 1st, 2008, the remaining state enterprise Správa Letiště Praha, s.p. has administered only assets excluded from the privatization transformation, i.e. the company’s legal bearings towards land affected by restitutions or by duplicate entries.

There are about 2,300 employees at Prague Airport; the company profit amounted to more than one billion CZK in 2007.
In the year 2007, Prague Airport handled a record 12.4 million passengers. Forty-three airlines connecting Prague with 106 worldwide destinations on direct flights offer their services to Prague Airport’s passengers. Prague Airport is also operated by six cargo carriers.

On account of its exceptional locality in the heart of Europe, Prague Airport is also becoming increasingly important as a transit hub. Long-term growth has been fuelled by the Czech Republic’s accession to the European Union in 2004 and its consecutive admission to the Schengen area. Since the end of March 2008, the handling of passengers and baggage destined for Schengen countries has been freed from customs and passport control. Czech Airlines with almost half of the market share has been the largest carrier active at the airport; the most dynamically growing sector became that of low-lost carriers.

Prague Airport works closely with the Ministry of Transport of the Czech Republic, the Civil Aviation Authority, the Air Traffic control of the Czech Republic, air carriers, public authorities within or outside of the aviation segment, airport users, the Capital City of Prague and municipalities in the airport’s vicinity.
